Cimex calcaratus Linnaeus, 1758 was placed on the Official List of Specific Names in Zoology as type species of Alydus Fabricius, 1803 (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1950: 467); see also Opinion 244 (1954). The names hirsutus, atratus, pluto and ater all refer to a dark form, which is the only form reported from North America. Alydus niger Motschulsky, 1859 is a nomen nudum and is referable to this species (Kiritshenko, 1915a).
