Tamanini (1951d) and V.G. Putshkov (1986) treated this species as a subspecies of Stictopleurus abutilon (Rossi, 1790) but Göllner-Scheiding (1975, 1983), Q.A. Liu & L.Y. Zheng (1993) and Moulet (1995a) treated it as a full species.
