El-Seabey (2000) listed Geocoris megacephalus var. anemiatus Montandon, 1907, G. megacephalus var. desertus Montandon, 1907 - both currently synonyms of pubescens - as subspecies of megacephalus, and two other synonyms of pubescens, Opthalmicus hyalinus Fieber, 1861 and O. timidus Puton, 1873, as valid species, though not indicating intentional change of taxonomic status.
