Notonecta (Notonecta) viridis Delcourt, 1909

The type specimens of Notonecta marmorea Fabricius belong to N. maculata, but the original description fits better N. viridis. Accordingly, Esaki (1928b) restored the name N. marmorea for N. viridis with subdivision in two subspecies: N. marmorea marmorea (= N. viridis mediterranea) and N. marmorea viridis (= N. viridis viridis). Esaki's view was accepted by Stichel (1955) and some other authors (e.g. Savage, 1989), but rejected by most specialists on aquatic bugs. It was also shown that N. viridis cannot be divided in clear-cut subspecies (Kanyukova, 1973a; Tamanini, 1979).
