Štys (1970a) was in doubt about the subspecific classification of Oriental populations, but as he distinguished only two clear subspecies, the Oriental and the African, the subspecies nigriceps Jeannel from India is tentatively placed here in synonymy of the Oriental subspecies. Record of the species from YE (Štys, 1986: 257; 1990: 5) possibly refer to a new subspecies; it is tentatively placed here under the nominotypical subspecies. Extralimital subspecies: Oncylocotis basalis curculio (Karsch, 1893), Afrotropical Region (a good species according to Villiers, 1969: 32).
