Saldula xanthochila (Fieber, 1859)

The single specimen (male) present under striata in the Fabricius collection (ZMUC; Zimsen, 1964: 305) has been re-examined (see also Schuh & al., 1987: 250) and found identical with S. xanthochila (Fieber), thence confirming the identification by Stål (1868a) and seemingly supporting the status of striata as a senior subjective synonym of xanthochila. As the original description of striata partly disagrees with xanthochila [notably concerning body size, indicated as subequal to the much larger Salda littoralis (L.) = S. zosterae (Fabricius)], doubts remain as to whether the present specimen actually is the type or/and if it orginally belonged to a mixed series. Hence, the synonymy of striata and xanthochila is regarded here as somewhat doubtful, therein following Reuter, 1888a: 340 and subsequent authors, and a replacement of xanthochila is not proposed. See also notes on S. misis. Earlier records from S Africa refer to another species. Old records from Algeria and Spain require confirmation.
