The record from Algeria (Annani et al., 2012) needs confirmation.
Previously confused with Gerris asper (Fieber, 1860). The record from Albania (Misja, 1973) probably refers to G. asper. The assignment by Southwood & Leston (1959) and Savage (1989) of G. lateralis from Great Britain as subspecies asper is unjustified.
