Laporte (1833) described Tapeinus rufus on one male from Java and indicated that its fore femora are toothed ("crenatis"). It is clear that Amyot & Serville (1843: 341) incorrectly gave the name rufus Laporte to females identified later by Laporte and placed his male with toothed fore femora in a new species and genus Durganda rubra. All later authors followed Amyot & Serville. It is desirable for the sake of stability of nomenclature to designate a neotype of Tapeinus rufus corresponding to misinterpretation by Amyot & Serville.
