According to Péricart (1982, 1983) this species seems well separated morphologically from Ph. dumetorum in the eastern part of its area, but it is difficult or even impossible to separate them in the western part. From the very short redescription of Monanthia quadrimaculata by A. Costa (1843) it is not clear whether he was dealing with Physatocheila confinis or Ph. dumetorum.
