Fieber (1851) described S. macrocephalus from Syria. Wagner (1953o) was unable to locate any type specimens, so he designated a specimen from Corsica as the lectotype. Since this specimen was not a member of the type series, it cannot be a lectotype. It could possibly be considered a neotype, but PĂ©ricart (2002) considered this type designation to be invalid; he also considered the species to be rather distinct, so no neotype designation was needed. Wagner (1965s) erroneously resurrected S. basalis as a valid species.
