Rambur (1839) at the end of his original description indicated that he described this species from a single male, but in the actual description he refers to characters of both males and females. Ribes & Schmitz (1992) pointed this out and indicated that they examined one male and two female specimens belonging to the type series. They also determined that the two female specimens actually belong to B. cinctum; they then designated the remaining male specimen as lectotype.
