The identity and synonymy of Coptosoma variegatum are a matter of debate (Herrich-Schaeffer, 1839: 108; Montandon, 1894a: 134, 1897f: 443; Kuhlgatz, 1901: 226, 242; Kerzhner & Jansson, 1985: 41). Currently, several Oriental species are mixed under this name. They have a similar variable colour pattern, but differ in the structure of the male genital segment. Kerzhner & Jansson (1985) removed C. ellia Walker, 1867 (= C. ceylonica Motschulsky, 1863, nom. praeocc., C. minima Atkinson, 1889) from synonymy with C. variegatum.
