Both Stål (1876) and Atkinson (1888a) recognized a group of 5 genera they believed to be related; Stål called it Axiagastus et affinia; Atkinson gave it a formal name, Axiagastaria. Both Lethierry & Severin (1893) and Kirkaldy (1909a) catalogued this genus within the same group of genera. Distant (1902a) did not recognize the Axiagastini as a valid group; he included Axiagastus within the tribe Hoplistoderini. Gross (1976) indicated that it might actually belong in the Antestiini. I have decided to treat it in its own tribe until further study can accurately clarify its tribal position.
